We develop and test novel diagrammatic solutions to pressing business problems (such as resolving dilemmas, making sense of opportunities, and dealing with resource constraints). We evaluate their effects in real-life settings and through experimental studies and we will document the best performing ones for (software-based) use in management meetings.
The Dynagrams project proceeds in four steps:
- The first step consists of a comprehensive review of the domain of diagrammatic reasoning and diagrammatic problem solving, as well as an identification of key diagram mechanisms and principles. This step encompasses both, a literature review of the relevant literature, and organizational case studies on select diagrammatic methods.
- In the second step, we will design and prototype novel diagrammatic methods for managerial problem solving and issue clarification in teams.
- The third step is dedicated to the rigorous evaluation of the developed dynagrams through experiments, and in-situ cases.
- As a final step, we will document and train the dynagrams that have proven beneficial in phase 3 of the project.
The project ran in cooperation with three partner organisations from January 2014 to October. The ensuing book is forthcoming in spring 2016.
